2024 is bringing a wonderfully mixed bag of design trends, from Japandi fusion to brutalism to vibrant wallpapers. Here’s a snapshot of the newest design trends taking over Australia.

Designing for a luxury acreage home
Homes on acreage properties have a different set of rules to regular suburban houses; that is, there are no rules. Acreage homeowners are free to create an oasis that caters to their own specific style and way of living.
In previous years, that looked like sprawling country estates, open-plan living, and a layout that embraces the natural surroundings.
In 2024, those trends are still in full swing, but we’re seeing a shift in designs and styles that are giving homeowners sensational new inspiration.

What’s in, what’s out
Some style trends are moving away from the spotlight, although it’s always important to remember that you can include anything you like in your own home. For instance, small office nooks have moved out of fashion as people have moved towards airy and comfortable work-from-home spaces.
What’s in: Sensory gardens
Beautiful gardens and landscaping have always been features of acreage properties, but a new style has recently emerged: sensory gardens and pathways.
Sensory gardens are therapeutic outdoor spaces that incorporate a variety of plants, textures, colours, sounds and even herbs and edible flowers to engage all five senses.
A brilliant way to support emotional and physical health, sensory gardens and pathways are places that encourage reflection, meditation and relaxation.
What’s in: Plunge pools
For homeowners who don’t want to upkeep or cost of a full-sized backyard swimming pool, plunge pools have become a popular alternative.
Touted for their health benefits, plunge pools typically span only 3 metres wide and come in multiple sizes and shapes, including circular. You have your choice of finishes too, from the shipping-container look to fully tiled glossy water features. Inground or set above, they can be a truly spectacular feature in a backyard.
Colours and patterns
Interestingly, the variety of colours and patterns coming into vogue for 2024 is an eclectic mix of pretty and masculine.
Exotic, vibrant patterns: Wildflower
Called ‘wildflower’, the bright and radiant design trend for 2024 embraces fun, colour, and intricate botanic patterns. Think vivid wallpapers splashed in colour, an eclectic bunch of flowers, bright feature walls and organic textures; a design style you would see in a boutique bed and breakfast.
Calm, luxurious textures: Equestrian
On the other end of the style spectrum, the ‘equestrian’ style is all about natural textures and colours. For instance, furniture, walls, floors and even rugs can incorporate beautiful, tactile materials such as polished wood, velvet and natural leather.
Architecture and design
While the ever-beautiful Hamptons and mid-century designs are still as popular as ever, there are some interesting new twists entering the scene.
For instance:
- Barn-style roof forms, which are becoming increasingly sought-after in Australia.
- The Japandi style, which fuses Japanese and Scandinavian styles.
- Internal brickwork to tie the interior of the home with the exterior (particularly popular for archways, kitchen splashbacks and fireplace surrounds).
One new trend for 2024 is a focus on interior elements that feel organic. That can mean including rounded shapes such as long archways or curved walls, or rendered surfaces that are soft and textured to touch.
In keeping with the organic theme, homeowners and designers are continuing to emphasise sustainability and eco-friendly materials. These might include recycled glass, reclaimed wood and restored bricks
Biophilic design
Lastly is the emerging trend, biophilic design. This design trend does more than add a few extra plants to a room; it involves creating spaces that connect with the environment. This connection promotes mental and emotional health, boosts the immune system and reduces stress.
To include biophilic design, consider adding a meditation space overflowing with plants, an indoor water feature, or incorporating trees inside your patio area.
