Building your forever home, for many is a once in a life-time investment, and if you are only going to do it once, you will want to do it right. It would be so frustrating to build your dream acreage home only to find that there were elements that you had wished you had included in the design. In our experience, these key features will not only maximise your new acreage home’s potential and home value, but it will also greatly enhance your acreage living experience.
- 1. A Mudroom
A mudroom is an essential space for you to take off your work boots, riding boots, hang up your hat, your raincoat or any sporting equipment that you do not want traipsed through the house. It’s also the perfect location to dump school bags and leave any devices charging.
2. Butler’s Pantry or Larder
The butler’s pantry and larder are often luxury items that we don’t have room for in crowded city living, but when you are living on acreage you may be further away from town and can’t quickly “pop to the shops” as you once could, so stocking up on supplies could be a real time saver. If you are growing your own food, a larder is the perfect place to store all of your jarred jams, tomato sauce and potatoes from your crops. You may also need the extra storage space to keep the equipment needed for your newfound hobbies.
3. View Maximising Windows
Let’s face it, one of the biggest reasons that you have always dreamed of living on acreage is for the views. Why allow your house to hide the view when you can let the view in? Design windows that will flood your home with light and nature and that will help you feel truly connected to the land.
4. A Fireplace
You can’t imagine an acreage home without a fireplace. It epitomizes everything you conjure up when you dream of escaping to the country. Nothing else enhances the acreage living experience as much as sitting by a fireplace does. Even in Queensland we get a few crisp months in winter, so we too can indulge in this heartwarming treat. You’ve got the space and now you have the firewood. All you need now is the hot chocolate and marshmallows.
5. Guest Accommodation
Being further out you might discover that your guests will find it easier to stay due to the distance required to come see you. On the other hand, they may just want to come and stay because you home is so gorgeous and fun. Either way, it’s great to be prepared to have a special little piece of luxury that they can retreat to to spend a night or more in. You may even be able to rent it out on airbnb from time to time for a little extra pocket money.
6. A Veranda or Outdoor Entertaining Area
In Queensland, an outdoor living area or veranda is another living area of the home. It provides a living space that’s connected to the outdoors, perfect for entertaining or relaxing whilst you take in the view, but there are also other practical reasons to a veranda or covered patio area. The insulated roofing of the veranda causes your home to feel cooler by keeping the sun, wind and rain off the side walls and windows of your home. This will make your home so much more comfortable in the summer months and can also be a little extra insurance on those days that a sudden deluge of rain has hit and you’ve forgotten to shut the windows!
